As a rough guide, 8 gauge suits smaller amplifiers, 4 gauge suits mid-power systems, and 0 gauge is for high-power or multi-amp setups. Measure the run from the battery to the amp with a little extra, and pair the cable with a correctly rated fuse close to the battery.
