Robust foundation of a great 2-channel SVS Prime Tower Speakers Piano Gloss

Prime Towers: Pillars of Performance—Stereo to Cinema
Delivering immersive, full-spectrum sound, the Prime Towers anchor an amazing listening experience. Their combination of both sonic accuracy and lively dynamics elevate movies to an immersive experience and the highlight the subtle nuances of your music. They are remarkable on their own in a two channel system, and in a home theater, the Towers’ voicing match and seamlessly meld with the other Prime or Ultra speakers in your system. The result: a suspension of reality that takes you to the center of the action—be it a mosh pit or jet fighter cockpit. Dialogue and vocals are clear and true. Bass grooves and explosions will rock the room. With Prime towers’ twin 6.5 inch woofers in each tower, you don’t need a stand-alone subwoofer if space won’t allow. (Should you have the room—and want the additional depth and dimension a dedicated subwoofer provides—Prime towers pair well with several SVS subwoofers, like the award-winning SB-2000.)

SVS Sweats The Details - You Hear Perfect Sound
With a detailed aluminum dome tweeter, dedicated midrange driver and dual long-throw woofers, the Prime Tower effortlessly cranks out clean, dynamic and powerful sound.

The innovative and sophisticated 3.5-way crossover has different crossover points for each woofer to deliver seamless frequency response with effortless low frequency extension. Translation – awesome bass response and a smooth, seamless transition to the midrange.

SVS took the 3.5-way crossover concept a step further – each woofer has a dedicated and completely separate internal compartment with its own custom port tuning frequency. The result is effortless, deep bass you need to hear in person to fully appreciate.

Similarly, the 4.5” midrange driver is mounted in its own dedicated and completely sealed compartment to ensure a smooth, precise and clear midrange free from standing wave coloration.

All this tech is packed into a handsome and sleek cabinet available in premium-grade piano gloss black or handsome black ash finish.

Driver and Crossover Details
  • The 1” Aluminum dome tweeter, which is light, efficient, and rigid, provides high SPL (Sound Pressure Level) with minimal distortion and the sense of utter transparency. It deploys a Finite-Element-Analysis (FEA) optimized diffuser to ensure the tweeter only has the perfect on-axis and off-axis frequency response. That way everyone in your listening room gets the best performance. Likewise, since we share these design traits with both the Prime and Ultra speakers, both product lines can blend well with one another while offering that SVS hallmark ‘airy’ presentation and incredibly unveiled highs.
  • The 4.5” mid-range driver is dedicated to blending with the tweeter and the dual 6.5” woofers, while delivering natural, smooth, and clear vocals. The polypropylene cone is light and rigid to give a flat frequency response and the SPL necessary to keep up with the other drivers. Like all of the other woofers in the Prime and Ultra series, the 4.5” mid uses an aluminum shorting ring for reduced distortion, and a vented voice coil former to keep the motor assembly cool during high SPL playback. All of this is built on an all-new cast ABS-fiberglass composite basket for precise component alignment and an inert frame without resonances or added harmonics.
  • We built our groundbreaking new 6.5” bass woofers on an all-new cast ABS-fiberglass composite basket for precise component alignment and an inert frame without resonances or added harmonics. Like all of the other drivers in the Prime family, the polypropylene cone is light and rigid to give a flat frequency response and the SPL necessary to keep up with the other drivers. Like all of the other woofers in the Prime and Ultra series, the 6.5” woofers use aluminum shorting rings for reduced distortion, and vented voice coil formers to keep the motor assemblies cool during high SPL playback. For perfect bass extension each woofer is in its own rear-ported and individually tuned enclosure. This way each woofer works in symphony to achieve the deepest and cleanest bass possible.
  • Our exclusive SoundMatch crossover sports premium-grade capacitors, air-core inductors, and heavy-trace printed circuit boards. All of these high-quality components yield lower distortion, tighter tolerances, better heat dissipation, and all around better sound. The innovative and sophisticated 3.5-way crossover is unique in that each woofer has its own discrete crossover, doubling the number of components used for the bass section, and allowing the woofers to work together without lobing in the vertical axis, which can cause cancellations at the listening area, and instead improves radiated sound power.

"They’re one of the few speakers that do everything well…rare combination of good sound quality and affordability. Great treble response, smooth mid-range and deep accurate bass makes them a great choice for both movies and music."

“The Prime Center is a three-way design. I was happy to hear that SVS went with this design choice as it addresses the off-axis issues that are common to the two-way design short-cuts manufacturers sometimes take to keep prices down. At this price point, its refreshing to see that SVS chose to go with a three-way design.”

“When you listen to $100k systems all day, it’s difficult to be really excited about $1k speakers. But let me tell you, these speakers, when listening in nearfield, are some of the best I’ve heard in the budget speaker category.”

“The flagship of the Prime line is the Prime Tower, which costs $999/pair in matte black or $1199/pair in gloss black. It's a 3.5-way design; the bottom woofer is there only to help out with the low bass. In the demo it sounded incredibly smooth and neutral, especially for a $999/pair tower. Bookshelf models are also available.”

    Comments about SVS Prime Tower:

I bought a pair of these towers to be used as mains in a 5.1 theater setup. So far they are the only speakers I bought for this setup. They are currently powered by second generation Emotiva XPA-5 amp connected to UMC-200 processor.

Fed with 200 watts per channel of power these towers sound fantastic! The amount of details these speakers bring out in music is striking. I hear nuances in familiar recordings that I never knew existed. The balance between low, mid and high frequencies is very good. Bass is strong and pretty deep for such compact towers. It is sufficient for most jazz recordings, although pop and rock music listening may still require a subwoofer for best effect. Midrange is balanced and clear and trebles are well defined and extended. These towers will work well for quiet background listening, but sound their best at moderate to high volumes. They can get impressively loud with proper amplification.

Here are a few observations. These towers need some time to be broken in. The first time I listened to them I was underwhelmed by their midrange driver's volume and clarity (it seemed too quiet compared to woofers and tweeters) and overwhelmed by the tweeter's presence (too bright and loud). After a couple of days of playback these problems disappeared. Another thing is these speakers perform best with thick wire. After I switched to 10 gauge wire the sound became much fuller and better balanced. Lastly, these speakers need to be placed at least a few inches away from back walls for optimal bass performance due to their rear port design.

Can't wait to get a pair of SB-2000 subs to compliment these!

      Comments about SVS Prime Tower:

      Two Channel Set Up

      The Pros:

First and foremost these are very detailed speakers. Quite honestly I'm still getting used to them. As soon as i hooked them up I knew they were something special. They have an enormous soundstage and provide a sense of depth to the room (if the recording permits). I was able to pinpoint instruments within recordings with ease. They are a smooth forward sounding speaker. The treble and midrange sound as one. Voices come through with ease on movie soundtracks which is a plus! The bass is adequate for the tower as well. I have mine placed a foot off my main wall and they can get play low when called for.

They pick apart recordings, so if you have a good one they will let you know and vice versa. They come very close to my long admired Triangle Celius 202's which i've had for 10 years now. The Celius' woofers are just a tad bit quicker and tighter. All said, these Prime towers are a great bargain at this price point. I have yet come across a speaker that comes closer.

      Now to the cons :

These are not "turn it up loud" rock speakers. These are a "sit back, relax and pick out the details"speakers. They seemed to work best with orchestral and jazz recordings. They tended to get fatiguing with regular rock recordings. That said, they seem to highlight or accentuate different parts of recordings as well. This was something I was not used to. It doesn't make them bad. It just make them different. If you have a bad recording, they will shove it in your face (MP3's are going play for what they are (gritty-unless you're using a higher bit rate)). They can get harsh sounding if pushed too hard as well, so i wouldn't recommend it as a party speaker (which I don't think SVS intended it to be).

Ok...with both the pros and cons added up, I decided to keep the Prime Towers. They weren't able to knock down my Celius 202"s but I shouldn't expect them to since the Celius' were another 1k asking price (at the time). They are very equal in terms of soundstaging and imaging though which was a pleasant surprise!

Let me add, I've only had these for about a month now and only have maybe 10-15 hours logged on them, so I'm not anywhere near a break-in period. That's why I've been holding off on a review. If their sound changes which I'm sure it will, I will keep you posted.

Great speaker SVS. I'm sure you will find an audience for it.

      Comments about SVS Prime Tower:

I thought since it can handle more watt power then the ultra bookshelves that it would be better sounding, boy was i wrong. It didnt seem louder either , it just sounds weird. I couldnt even hear my 2 1000rms svs 13inch ported subs anymore, it didnt blend well. Sent them back & kept my ultra bookshelves & and ultra center. I was using Emotiva 200 rms 3 channel amp & Emotiva umc-200 pre amp. I ran the mic before testing the speakers. Followed all svs eq settings on towers.
