E Ink reader that supports 3rd party apps like Scribd

I wanted to buy an e-reader to read books on because I read a lot, sometimes hours at a time and the e-ink format is better for your eyes. I have an iPad but for extended reading times the backlighting and blue light is bad for eyes. My only problem was I didn’t want to be boxed into buying an Amazon kindle or B&N nook reader that only supported their brand books and subscriptions. After reading reviews of all the most popular ebook subscription services I settled on “Scribd” app because it had unlimited access for a cheap monthly subscription price to the most books, audiobooks and magazines from all the BIG NAME publishers which means you get lots of new releases. So I set out to find a E-reader tablet that supported 3rd party apps like Scribd. That proved to be quite hard to find. Tons of e-reader tablets are out there but the key was finding “E-reader that supports E-ink AND 3rd party apps” After many hours searching and reading reviews I settled in the Boox Nova 3 (7.8 inch) and I am so pleased with my purchase. It’s the perfect portable size, and featherweight compared to my iPad. It came preloaded with google play which allowed me to quickly download the Scribd app, kindle reader and lots of other apps with tons of free books. It literally took less than 10 minutes to connect to my WiFi, download reading apps and be good to go. The Boox Nova 3 has the full functional ability of android tablet or iPad ...but I choose to use only as my dedicated e-Book reader which makes the battery last literally for a weeks on a single charge. I highly recommend to anyone searching for the elusive “E-ink reader that supports 3rd party reading apps”

Android 10 Operating System Kicks!

Surprisingly, this Onyx Boox Nova 3 is more powerful with a much higher quality than my previously owned Boyue Likebook Mars, which only had an Android 6 operating system, and was difficult to get it to download the Android 8 software and actually seemed sluggish. This Nova 3 device comes loaded with Android 10.Nova 3 has impressed me with the quick response in performance of tasks. The battery life and the many screen lighting options won me over. I can read my Google play books, B&N nook books, Amazon kindle and Kobo books besides listening to my MP3 music and audio books. Don't let the small speaker on the back of the device fool you, the sound is remarkably loud without using bluetooth or headphones!

Great e-reader and note taker

Very impressed with the Nova 3. I had tried a reMarkable tablet and this is so much better! Handwriting experience is good, the ability to search written notes is fantastic. Plus it has the ability to download apps. I'm very impressed by the battery life and the overall ease of use.

Wonderful device

Very impressed. Quick and responsive. Long battery life. Able to use books from Amazon, Google, Barnes and Noble and the library. Initial setup and app installation was complete in a couple of minutes.

Wonderful e-ink note book and supercharged reader

I use this to keep searchable notes at work, make comments on PDFs (presentations) and BuJo. I also read kindle books and manage my calendar on the home screen. It’s great but the pen feels cheap so suggest an upgrade. Being able to search for key words in hand written notes is fantastic, and I like being able to push a screenshot from my laptop to my device and drop it into a note.

Heavy, no page turn buttons, some apps laggy, poor reader but interesting tablet.

I am comparing this as an ereader to a Koba Forma. The Forma has side page turn buttons and weighs much less despite the same screen size. The Forma changes orentation when I turn it. When I purchased this I did not expect the weight to bother me but it does when holding for a long time vs other ereaders like the Forma which has the same screen size. One must also touch the screen to change pages which is clunky, many users buy a remote control to turn pages and put the Nova 3 on a stand or table rather than hold it. This is very inconvenient. So basically a very poor reading experience.By laggy this is not really the Boox's fault per say. If one wants to use apps not made by Boox for writing they can lag which makes it hard to use, this is because they are not designed for e-ink. Boox has done a lot of work to try to optimize ceratain apps in their store and for others have an optimize option it does help for some apps like some reading apps. The built in reader does not seem to have real page numbers but it seems to do pretty well with pdfs the high spec hardware compared to any regular ereader sure helps. Of course this is basically an android tablet so you have access to all ebook stores no need to strop drm or use calibre which was an attraction for me as well as considering some drills. I found that it was unusable as a reader due to weight and the need for a remote for page turn buttons. I am not going to sit my "book" on a stand, I want to change positions and "curl up with a book".Being a tablet the battery life holds up way better than I would have predicted even if it is eink. One can add a keybord or mouse via USB OTG or bluetooth though again lag on typing.Anyway very interesting idea, very bad reader.
