Atoto kills it. The best radio I have ever owned. For the price . As well as all their products. Excellent, great features. Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Flexible yet Fuss-Free

I put my S8 Ultra in a 20-year old Toyota Avalon. After I had spent weeks rebuilding the top end of the engine, I figured I’d punch up the stock stereo with an Android head unit. For years I had a Parrot Bluetooth add-on adapter that whined and chirped with 60 cycle interference. I thought about upgrading to a double-din unit from one of the typical car stereo brands, but what those products lack in flexibility they make up for in a weighty price tag. After reading some reviews of Android head units, I decided they had matured enough to be worth a shot. I settled on ATOTO based on the positive reviews and found the brand-new S8 line just before I wrapped up my search. I’ve had the S8 Ultra for a few weeks now. I’m confident I made a good choice. And, for an even more convincing endorsement than mine, I can tell you that my wife, who has little patience for overly intricate gadgets, enjoys the S8 with hardly a fuss.Customer ServiceEven though customer service usually comes at the end of a review, I want to put it first. Even though the S8 comes with all the usual documentation, it’s so new that it lacks a deep online knowledgebase. So I had to rely on customer service more than usual. The service was notably responsive and thorough despite the language and time changes. ATOTO is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you’re satisfied with their products.InstallationInstalling the unit itself was straightforward. I kept the factory amp by using a Metra harness that easily paired up with the S8 with the factory radio connector. I’m not an audiophile, but the sound through the factory amp pleases my ears.I bought the fascia to fit my car model and trim that makes the S8 look at home (all you can notice is that the original faux-wood trim is a little faded compared to the new piece).I added a few extras when I installed the radio that took more time to install, like the AC-HD03 rear view camera. But the radio installation itself is as simple as any other install. The only problem I had wasn’t with the S8 itself. I ran a 4-gauge power cable directly from the battery. For some reason, the voltage on that cable would drop after driving in reverse for a few seconds causing the S8 to reboot. The cause is a puzzle for another day; to get around it, I simply connected the S8 power to the regular constant 12v wire in the factory radio harness. Everything works perfectly. ATOTO customer service guided me through the troubleshooting steps to make the fix easy.SetupYou can start using the S8 pretty much right out of the box after you connect your phone to Bluetooth 1. Beyond that, the setup is more like setting up an Android device than a radio. After you go through the hardware-specific settings, like the color of the illuminated buttons and preferences for sounds and cameras, you can install whatever Android apps you’d like—Nova Launcher, Tasker, NPR One—you name it. How far you go is up to you.Installed SoftwareThe S8 comes with a useful set of standard Android apps like Chrome, YouTube, and Google Maps, along with auto-specific tools like Torque and a tire pressure monitoring app. There are also several proprietary apps for the radio, equalizer and audio settings, Bluetooth phone and audio and a few others. You can install your own choices for many of these pre-installed apps. The only one I couldn’t find a replacement for was the Bluetooth music player; there are a lot of audio players that will send an audio stream via Bluetooth, but this app needs to control Bluetooth audio as a receiver, something that isn’t common. No matter, though, since the stock app works well.OperationThe S8 has a lot of tricks, and they all work pretty well. The 2-second startup does what it’s supposed to, making the unit turn-on right away like any other stereo. The display is plenty bright and crisp with a viewing angle that makes it easy to see from anywhere in the car. With one exception, I’ve had no problem with any of the radios—Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 1 (for the phone), Bluetooth 2 (for everything else), GPS. The Bluetooth is fast and reliable. The Wi-Fi works as well as the Wi-Fi on my phone. The only radio I haven’t been able to fully use yet is the cell radio, but I don’t think it’s ATOTO’s issue. Instead, it appears that the S8 is so new that no US cell carrier recognizes the device IMEI number as compatible with their network. I’m still working with ATOTO customer service and my cell carrier to solve it.The S8 Ultra’s gesture feature works well—almost too well. The system often finds intention in random hand movements, which is one of the few things that made my wife fuss. We’ll just need to do some fine-tuning.Wireless CarPlay is probably the main feature that keeps my wife fuss-free. It just works. Android Auto is wired, but works reliably, too.The panoramic back-up camera is a clever and solid addition, as is the tire pressure monitoring system. Add the S8 Ultra’s 4 USB ports, the front-facing micro SD slot and aux jack, and you have a flexible device your can configure to your needs.Pros• Bang for the Buck• Simple when it needs to be• Reliability• Flexible Options• Brilliant Display• Customer ServiceCons• Not yet recognized by US cell carriers• Limited user community

5 star headunit

Awesome head unit took awhile to route the additional wires (wifi + 4G + Mic+ GPS) but when it is all installed its like angels singing from the heavens. I absolutely love this stereo

excellent product for the money

i installed the unit in my 2008 Saturn Sky. being a convertible i was concerned about the screen being washed out. to my surprise it has been excellent so far. the modified android OS works well easily switching between apps. my one issue is the wifi connection is a bit slow. i do not have a cellular dongle connected, i cannot speak to that. i am running an external amplifier sound is really nice.

Big improvement

Just installed the new s8 ultra in my 92 suburban, as you can see in the photo's it took a total of 45 minutes. World of difference between the 2 radios.1. Startup time is quicker2. Radio sounds much richer and has more audio settings3. Downloading from play store faster, downloaded waze (80mb) in about 20 seconds4. Radio app seems to be easier to use5. Not sure about android auto yet, need to play with it more but was easy to set up6. Back-up camera works the same. But has settings for the grid. Atoto needs to release the AC-HD03 camera for purchase, which is needed for the virtual view.7. The music player looks nicer and loaded over 2000 wma songs instantly. Still doesn't show in albums, so I downloaded VLC player which solves that. All this I noticed so far in about 1 hour of playing around with it. Am extremely happy with my purchase. Night and day difference between the a6 and the s8. Would recommend to anyone looking for double din android.@atotocarstereo

It just gets better.

Updated again. Thanks to Atoto's persistent customer service I can now report that everything in the S8 Ultra works as advertised. The contact sync bug has been remedied and the SIM card is flying at 4G speeds on Google Fi and I also confirmed that an AT&T SIM also worked. Sheila Li of Atoto kept up with me from the first day that I had issues and made sure to follow up and provide detailed instructions to fix every issue. For those of you that are considering this unit or have encountered the contact sync issue when using Bluetooth, be certain that before you sync Bluetooth for the first time that you go into the settings of the S8, go to accounts, account sync, turn off contact sync and the S8 will not empty your phone or Gmail contacts but will pull the contacts from the connected Bluetooth phone.Another tip is that you'll want to install your SD card into the S8 upon first boot and let the S8 format your SD card rather than formatting the SD card from your PC and then moving it to the S8.The display is responsive and bright, the audio output from the TOSLINK optical sounds terrific, the S8 spots 11 satellites from Charlotte and keeps Waze running well. Having 512GB of storage will ensure you can take more music with you than you can listen to in a year of road trips.I'm very impressed with the S8 Ultra and Atoto's customer service. I'll post pictures of the install in my final update.Updated. Well don't I feel like an idiot? I had originally given this a single star having thought my unit was DOA. It turns out that the fuse in the back of the unit was bad. After a quick swap it fired up and I am now tinkering with it to get through it's initial configuration. I'm still playing with it to get things working as I want but I can confirm that everything except the SIM works, I'll provide another update on that if I get that working. One issue, it's annoying and could be bad for some users, is that the S8 will wipe out all of your contacts if you enable contact sharing. Don't do it. It's a bug. Make sure you export your contacts if you plan to sync with bluetooth as the S8 will currently wipe out your Google Contacts. I have confirmed this bug with other users on the XDA Forums.Tidal and Waze loaded quickly and Tidal was able to save downloaded music to the MicroSD card that I installed. Bluetooth audio from the built in microphone works clearly. The optical output works well and doesn't blast at maximum output when the unit is restarted and one can select the default start up volume so you won't destroy your own nerves as you start to work on Monday after an epic Saturday.Atoto customer support has been excellent in following up with me after I reported the DOA unit. I'm impressed so far.The old review:With great excitement I set up my bench to configure my new S8 Ultra before installing in my car. I connected the 12v DC supply via alligator clips to the constant and switched power and the negative to ground. I heard a little click inside the unit and before I could press the power button I then heard a little sizzle and then smelled the burnt electronics odor that let's one know that things are not going to go as planned. I pressed power. Nothing. I waited a moment and tried again. Nothing. I tried the reset button with the faintest of hope. Nothing.I've sent an email to support@myatoto.com for advice but I think this going back. I will update this review when there is a resolution.Atoto customer support emailed me back that same evening and has sent out an AC to 12V adapter kit in hopes that the unit isn't actually dead but that my power supply isn't behaving as it ought (it is and the unit is dead but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as they're trying to make this right and have responded so quickly). Once I confirm the defective unit, I'll work towards a return/replacement through support as it doesn't seem that Amazon is stocking this same unit as of August 19.

Overpriced, burned my car down

They jacked the price up $134 from one month to the next. And it's a huge fire hazard. Dont buy!
